On the column, there is a "ladder" looking piece attached to the shift lever. The cable that pulls the shift-indicator pointer into place attaches to that "ladder"-like lever. There are several slots cut into the ladder, to adjust the pointer. It's a PITA to hook it up, you gotta have tiny fingers.
